Enter the Poetry In Motion 'Junior' Contest . . . Nominate a Gifted High School Student!
Poetry In Motion . . .
Geoffrey Owens, from The Cosby Show, and RisingStar31 Productions teamed up last year to establish the annual Poetry In Motion Contest. Each year the competition explores the theme, “Holidays and Special Events, Past and Present.”
This year, we're opening the Poetry in Motion 'Junior' Contest, to award a $1,000 Prize to a High School student for writing the best original Sonnet on this theme. Each candidate's poem must be nominated and submitted by their English/Literary Arts Teacher within the contest season.
Teachers are encouraged to identify gifted students and promote the further develop of their skills and appreciation for poetry writing. The student should submit one sonnet (which commonly consists of 14 lines, each of which has ten syllables written in iambic pentameter). Writers, however, may submit a poem that is similar in nature to a sonnet, if it’s not entirely structured within a Shakespearean, or otherwise, classical form. A poem with a powerfully inspiring message will still be given consideration.
The winning student is awarded a $1,000 Prize and publication on our Web site.
Geoffrey, a Shakespearean actor and drama instructor, will select the winning writer from a group of ten finalists.
Eligibility: High School students in the United States who're enrolled in public, private or charter schools. Poems must be original sonnets written in English. Student's work must be nominated and registered by an English/Literary Arts teacher. Opening Date: October 1, 2012 Deadline: April 30, 2013 Contest Processing Fee: $5.00 Announcement: Winner will be notified by the last week in June 2013. Check the Web site for winner information.
